![]() Riesling Wine
Riesling, a noble white grape variety, produces wines that are delicate and characterized by a mineral and floral bouquet - and, depending on the region and winemaker, may be complex and capable of long aging. Riesling grapes are used in sparkling, dry, sweet and semi-sweet white wines, and are considered one of the three "Great Whites," along with Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The Riesling grape is an ancient German varietal, originating in the Rhine Valley, probably dating back to the 9th century. Riesling grapes were introduced to France at the end of the 15th century. Today, in Alsace, where Riesling flourishes, a full 25% of the vineyards are planted to this varietal. Riesling wines are wonderfully versatile with food, working equally well with fish (and any seafood), pork or other white meat dishes. Rieslings are also the "go-to" wines to pair with spicy, flavorful cuisines such as Thai and Chinese. As late harvest wines (Vendanges Tardives), Rieslings from Alsace are particularly good partners with citrus fruit desserts, such as lemon tart.
