France is one of the world's top wine-producing countries, boasting many diverse regions and wine styles. In the realm of fine wines, France still sets the standard and is considered the benchmark for classic wines that are sought after by collectors and wine lovers around the world. The key to understanding French wines is the concept of "terroir," that all-encompassing term that essentially connects a wine's expression to its origin. While 'terroir" can be described as the soil and microclimate surrounding the vine, in a larger sense, it can refer to all aspects of a vine's exposure and how clearly it reflects its place of origin. The concept is codified in and reinforced by France's Appellation d'Origine Contrôle (AOC) system, established to assure a wine's origin, and by extension, its authenticity.
